Weight loss shakes are often sold as the "magic bullet" solution to lose weight, but without the proper research into what you are taking, you could actually be doing yourself more harm than good. The makers of protein shakes and meal replacement shakes often claim their products can decrease body fat and promote fast weight loss, but before taking these shakes, a closer look is needed.
First, replacing meals with a weight loss shake may help you reduce your daily intake of calories, which will, in fact, help you lose weight. However, if you rely solely on protein shakes or meal replacement shakes for regular meals, you will most likely be missing out on the nutritional benefits of whole foods.
Shake Protein
Another problem with many protein shake diets, is the fact that your body could be getting far more protein than it actually needs. While the bodybuilding community will argue with me, the simple fact of the matter is that we only need between forty six (46) and fifty six (56) grams of protein each day. This is especially true when you are trying to lose weight (versus packing on the pounds like a bodybuilder). Any more protein than this, could result in an increase in weight because your body will not be able to use it in a timely manner, resulting in stored body weight.
I know there is tons of mixed information regarding fat loss out there, but the fact is, the absolute, rock-bottom key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume.
If your goal is to burn fat and lose weight and you want the speed and ease of using a weight loss shake to speed your results, then you absolutely you must use a high quality shake that comes from whole foods and includes the proper amount of protein that comes from lean sources.
